Saltar al EspañolThe time of year when a baby is conceived conditions the probability it will be born prematurely, according to a new U.S. study published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Specifically, the work, based on studies of nearly 650,000 mothers reveals that children conceived in May face a risk of being born prematurely 10% higher than those who began their pregnancy in any other month of the year. Researchers attribute this to the fact that mothers are more exposed to seasonal influenza viruses in the months of January and February, just as a baby conceived in May is about to be born. Previous studies suggested that influenza can induce premature labor in women in their eighth month of pregnancy. And although the new work shows that this association exists, does not identify the cause-effect relationship. On the other hand babies conceived in the summer months tend to weigh more at birth than those born at other times of the year, in part because "women who become pregnant tend to gain more weight during pregnancy when it begins in the summer season," said Janet Currie, a researcher at Princeton University and co-author of the research.

Concretamente, el trabajo, basado en estudios con casi 650.000 madres, revela que los niños concebidos en mayo se enfrentan a un riesgo de nacer antes de tiempo un 10% superior al de aquellos que iniciaron su gestación en cualquier otro mes del año. Los investigadores lo atribuyen a que las madres están más expuestas al virus de la gripe estacional en los meses de enero y febrero, justamente cuando un bebé concebido en mayo está a punto de nacer. Estudios previos ya sugerían que la gripe puede inducir un parto prematuro en mujeres en su octavo mes de embarazo. Y aunque el nuevo trabajo pone en evidencia que esta asociación existe, no identifica la relación causa-efecto. Por otro lado los bebés concebidos en los meses de verano tienden a pesar más al nacer que los nacidos en otros momentos del año, en parte porque "las mujeres que se quedan embarazadas tienden a ganar más peso durante el embarazo cuando este comienza en la estación estival", explica Janet Currie, investigadora de la Universidad de Princeton y coautora de la investigación.
