Is it safe to pee in the swimming pool?

Absolutely not. Although Olympic swimmers like Michael Phelps admit their practice, new research by a team of scientists from Purdue University (USA) has determined that the chlorine used for swimming pools can be potentially dangerous if mixed with urine. The study, which is published by the American Chemical Society in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, explains that the combination of chlorine and urine can lead to toxic substances that can cause health problems. Although adding chlorine to pool water is the most common way to kill the germs that cause diseases of urination in this water is that we convert a healthy summer activity and a potential danger to our health. In reaching this conclusion, the researchers mixed the urine uric acid and chlorine, after an hour had passed, there appeared trichloramines or substances such as cyanogen chloride, which are released into the air as a gas. The effects which can be brought on by inhaling these toxic compounds and others is lung problems, heart and even the central nervous system problems.

A pesar de que nadadores olímpicos como Michael Phelps admitan su práctica, una nueva investigación realizada por un equipo de científicos de la Universidad de Purdue (EEUU) ha determinado que el cloro que se utiliza para las piscinas puede ser potencialmente peligroso si se mezcla con la orina. El estudio, que ha sido publicado por la American Chemical Society en la revista Environmental Science & Technology, explica que la combinación de cloro y orina puede dar origen a sustancias tóxicas que pueden causar problemas de salud. A pesar de que añadir cloro al agua de las piscinas es la forma más común de matar los microbios que causan enfermedades, la acción de orinar en este agua hace que convirtamos una sana y veraniega actividad en un peligro potencial para nuestra salud. Para llegar a esta conclusión los investigadores mezclaron el ácido úrico de la orina y el cloro; al cabo de una hora habían aparecido sustancias como las tricloraminas o el cloruro de cianógeno, que son liberadas al aire como un gas. Entre los efectos que puede acarrearnos la inhalación de estos y otros compuestos tóxicos se derivan problemas pulmonares, de corazón e incluso del sistema nervioso central.

How do you smell?

Despite earlier estimates talking about 10,000 odors, a new study by Rockefeller University (USA) has determined that humans are able to distinguish up to 1 trillion different odors. The human nose is more powerful than we thought. The study, which was published in the journal Science, explains that the human olfactory system can detect more than 10,000 odors previously specified, and our nose can discriminate odors very easily. In reaching this conclusion, the researchers conducted an experiment with 26 volunteers and 264 pairs of different smells but with varying degrees of similarity divided into three groups and each group containing 10, 20 or 30 different chemical compounds (molecules responsible for giving the smell of orange, anise or mint green, etc.). Then they gave three jars to each participant: two of them had the same smell and another containing a different smell with the same number of components but with different degree of similarity. Participants were asked to distinguish what the smell was not consistent .

A pesar de estimaciones anteriores que hablaban de 10.000 olores, un nuevo estudio desarrollado por la Universidad de Rockefeller (EEUU) ha determinado que los seres humanos somos capaces de distinguir hasta 1 billón de olores distintos. La nariz humana es más poderosa de lo que pensábamos. El estudio, que ha sido publicado en la revista Science, explica que el sistema olfativo humano puede detectar más de los 10.000 olores anteriormente especificados, ya que nuestra nariz es capaz de discriminar los olores con mucha facilidad. Para llegar a esta conclusión los investigadores realizaron un experimento con 26 voluntarios y 264 pares de olores diferentes pero con diversos grados de similitud divididos en tres grupos y conteniendo cada grupo 10, 20 o 30 componentes químicos diferentes (con moléculas responsables de dar olor a la naranja, al anís o a la menta verde, entre otras). Luego, entregaron tres frascos a cada participante: dos de ellos tenían el mismo olor y otro contenía un olor diferente con el mismo número de componentes pero con diferente grado de semejanza. Se pidió a los participantes que distinguieran qué olor era el que no concordaba.
